Travelling to Berlin

Berlin-Tegel is the fourth largest airport in Germany, handling roughly 20 million passengers each year. From Tegel, there are flights available to destinations the world over, including Europe, North America, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Tegel Aiport is located 13 km north-west of the centre of Berlin and there is no shortage of transport links between the center and the airport. The TXL JetExpressBus offers a reliable service between Tegel, the Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Alexanderplatz station at the center of Berlin.

The second airport in Berlin is named Berlin-Schönefeld and is the 8th largest airport in Germany which is served by both charter and low-budget flights. There is a train station conveniently located just a short walk away from Schönefeld Airport which is served by S-Bahn lines: the S9 and S45, both taking around 40 minutes to get to the city center. There are also 8 bus lines that serve the airport.

Berlin has several major train stations, but Berlin Hauptbahnhof is the biggest. From Hauptbahnhof, you can get to almost anywhere in Berlin using the S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines, either the S5, S7, S75, and U55. Several buses also stop at the station and the M5 tram route opened recently, with the M8 and M10 routes scheduled to be completed by mid-2015.

Berlin Gesundbrunnen is a major station north of the city center. It is one of the oldest train stations in Berlin and was opened in 1872. Due to its location, it is a crossing point for several train routes and S-Bahn lines in the city and to other destination in Germany. You can get to the station by both U and S-Bahn. The station also lies on the Ringbahn line (the S41 goes clockwise and the S42 goes anti-clockwise) that circles the peripheries of the city, along with the S1, S2, S25 and U8.

ZOB (Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof Berlin) is situated in the west of city and with 35 platforms it is one of the largest bus stations in Germany. The main bus providers operating from the station are Berlin Linien Bus, Flixbus and Postbus. The ZOB is located a short, well-sign posted walk from the S and U-Bahn station Kaiserdamm.

How to Get Around in Berlin

BVG operates Berlin's public transport, including the trams, metros and buses, all except for the S-Bahn which belongs to Deutsche Bahn. Berlin's public transport is reliable and comparatively inexpensive for a capital city.

Driving in Berlin can be a stressful experience as it has a tendency to be extremely busy, particularly in the city center and around rush hour. Rush hour in Berlin is between 8:00 a.m to 10:00 a.m, then again when commuters are returning from work from 5:00 p.m to 6:30 p.m. Outside of these times, however, Berlin is quite a pleasure to drive around with its wide, spacious roads and a great deal of parking spaces. Parking for the whole day can cost as little as €18.

Berlin is an extremely pedestrian-friendly city, particularly in the center where there are numerous squares and streets that have been completely pedestrianized. However, don't underestimate its size - walking around the entire city would be long and tiresome. Cycling is also an extremely popular way to travel around the city and cycle paths are widely accessible in most parts of the city.

Mercedes Benz Arena

The Mercedes Benz Arena is home to Berlin’s Basketball Team - Alba Berlin, and Berlin’s Ice Hockey Team - Eisbären Berlin (Berlin Polar Bears). Other than the weekly sporting events, the 17,000 capacity, multi-purpose Arena also plays host to major international concerts, making it one of the best-known venues in the city. With the former Berlin Wall right outside its front door and hosting events ranging from the MTV European Music Awards to European Basketball Championship, the Arena has established itself as a modern attraction in Berlin.

The Mercedes Benz Arena is easily reachable by public transport by using the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Bus or Tram services.

Arena Berlin

The Berlin Festival, Disclosure, flea markets, and conferences - this multifunctional old factory building beside the river Spree and along the old GDR border was at one time Europe's largest free-standing hall. It is hard to visit Berlin and not hear of an event taking place there.

Astra Kulturhaus

Located in the vibrant district of Friedrichshain, this 2000 capacity concert hall boasts a little garden and music hall. Its intimate setting makes it a favorite for both bands and concert goers.
